After 25 years of coaching the Skaneateles boys hockey team, Mitch Major has decided this season will be his last with the Lakers.

While the Lakers are in the midst of a dominant decade on the ice, Major told 水果派AV his ensuing retirement is the result of a soon-to-be empty nest.
鈥淢y son, Charlie, is playing at Cornell right now. My son, Henry, is playing in the (United States Hockey League) for the Chicago Steel. When he took over as head coach for Skaneateles in 2000, Major didn鈥檛 believe he would make it more than five seasons. But he credits his wife, Kristen, his mother and father, Peggy and Charlie, his players, his assistant coaches and his Christian faith for helping him find his way as a coach over the past quarter-century.
As the Lakers look to cap off their coach鈥檚 career with their聽seventh state title this weekend, which would be the most in state history, one of his goals is to appreciate his remaining time with the team.
鈥淚 want to enjoy every moment of this trip,鈥 he said. 鈥淚'm looking forward to the downtime before the game (on Saturday). I'm looking forward to that last practice (on Friday). It's the last practice of us being together, really having just a great time together and working hard.鈥
Though he will be moving away from the bench, Major will continue to have an impact on the ice. In January, he聽 for the Rochester-based Saints Hockey Club. The position will give him more flexibility with his schedule, he said, while also allowing him to help the youth program in person when he can.
Along with the sectional and state championships he helped lead the Lakers to, Major owns a record of 450-111-39 since taking over as head coach. As he looks back on a career filled with wins and celebrations, his pride for the program comes from the excitement his players have shown when they step onto the ice.聽
鈥淭he one thing that I am most proud of is that these players are just so happy when they're here. They can't wait to get to the rink. They can't wait to hang out together," he said. "Whatever else I do, if they came every day and worked hard and had fun, and were in a culture where they were allowed to make mistakes and get better, that would be the one thing that I want to be remembered for."
