Richard Timian's decision to retire as a Sennett Town Court justice was inspired by the words of a friend.聽
Timian, who retired Jan. 31 after 18 years in the seat, told 水果派AV he's still able to do the job and already misses it. But as he neared his 75th birthday this year, he thought of his idol Jim Cuddy.
An Auburn City Court judge for decades, Cuddy retired at 70, as state law mandates for city court seats. He agreed with the law, however, because it helps introduce younger minds to the bench. Timian said he "always put a lot of stock" in the perspective of Cuddy during their long time together as law firm partners, and believes聽Justice聽Katherine A. Sholar will do a great job succeeding him in Sennett.
The way Timian conducted himself as judge was also inspired by Cuddy and retired聽Cayuga County Court Judge Mark Fandrich, who swore in Timian. He was appointed in February 2007 and first ran for the seat that fall. Another inspiration was retired New York State Court of Claims Judge Nicholas Midey Jr., under whom Timian served as law clerk from 1995 to 2019 and learned patience in particular.

"I just tried to take what the three of them represented to me as being a good judge," Timian said. "I tried to emulate them, what I thought they would do."聽
Timian, an Auburn native who now lives in Sennett, spent most of his legal career juggling multiple positions. From 1976 to 1995 he was a general practice attorney聽at a firm with Cuddy and Mike Durgala, and from 1978 to 1995 he worked part-time as legislative counsel with the New York State Senate. Years after starting full-time as Midey's clerk, he balanced that with his Sennett seat.聽
As much work as the positions required, Timian said he enjoyed them in large part due to the people.
"I considered myself blessed," he said.聽"It was an honor and a privilege to serve the town and to get to know the people involved in the town government."聽
Timian's retirement took effect Feb. 1, and Feb. 21 was declared Judge Richard F. Timian Day in Sennett. He joked that he now has more free time than he has had since he took a summer job at the age of 15 about 60 years ago. When asked what he wants to do next, he paused for a moment and, with a laugh, said, "Nothing." He spent the first month of his retirement cleaning out his home office.
While he doesn't have any plans, Timian said he hopes to do some traveling with his wife, Maureen. An avid golfer, he's also looking forward to spending more time on the green.
Fandrich, who was in attendance for Timian's last day as judge after being there for his first, told 水果派AV the Sennett justice was a "dedicated public servant."聽
"Judge Timian is a wonderful gentleman who is very knowledgeable of the law and had compassion for people who appeared before him," Fandrich said. "You couldn't ask for a better person."聽聽
Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci, who handed cases at Sennett Town Court as an assistant district attorney, called Timian "fair and professional."
"Judge Timian is one of the best. For me, it was really an honor to appear in front of him," she told 水果派AV. "It's a well-deserved retirement."
