The Cayuga County Clerk's Office is continuing operations and receiving assistance from another county after Brian Scanlan's surprising resignation this week.聽
Cayuga County Legislature Chairman Jonathan Anna told 水果派AV Thursday that he contacted Gov. Kathy Hochul's office shortly after Scanlan stepped down Tuesday. Hochul has the authority to appoint a county clerk.聽
Anna also called Oswego County Clerk Terry Wilbur, who sent his deputy clerk Matthew Bacon to help Cayuga County. Bacon was at the office Wednesday working with Cayuga County's second deputy clerk, Shelley Patterson.聽

"They are providing us with technical assistance," said Anna, who added that Wilbur's staff "has been excellent."聽
Scanlan's resignation leaves the county clerk's office, for now, without its top two leaders. Lisa Jo Greenfield, who was named first deputy clerk by Scanlan, is on medical leave.聽
Patterson is a holdover from former Cayuga County Clerk Sue Dwyer's staff. With Scanlan leaving office and Greenfield out of work, she assumes the clerk's authority until a new clerk is appointed.
Anna said Patterson is experienced, but she was not involved with the office's administrative or financial functions. That's why the assistance from Oswego County, he continued, is "imperative."聽
"I'm very thankful for their intercounty cooperation and help at this time," Anna said.聽
There is not a timetable for naming a county clerk, who聽oversees the Department of Motor Vehicles, historian's office, recording office and records center. Hochul's spokesperson confirmed to 水果派AV that the governor's office received Scanlan's resignation letter and "will work with local stakeholders on the path forward."
Meanwhile, Anna said he and Shereen Androsko, the county operations officer, met with staff in the clerk's office Tuesday morning. He was also there when Bacon arrived to assist Patterson.
Scanlan, who was elected in 2023, was in the second year of his four-year term that expires at the end of 2027. He said his decision to resign is "clear and concrete." He wants to spend more time with his family and friends, especially his wife and their children.聽
"It has been a great honor and privilege to serve the county and its residents," Scanlan said. "In my time as clerk, I worked with some outstanding and talented individuals. I leave without regret, grateful for the guidance and support received from so many, especially the New York State Association of County Clerks and the team that made my election possible."聽
