With a special election likely to fill the Cayuga County clerk vacancy, local Republicans are endorsing a familiar face to run for the seat.Â
The Cayuga County Republican Committee backed Kristine Lytle, a Department of Motor Vehicles employee, for county clerk.Â
"We are thrilled to support Kristine Lytle as she embodies the values and vision we believe will bring stability and prosperity back to the county clerk's office," said Nate VeVone, chair of the Cayuga County Republican Committee. "Our commitment to the community is stronger than ever, and we are ready to work together to ensure a brighter future for Cayuga County."Â
Kristine Lytle is the Conservative candidate for Cayuga County clerk.Â

Lytle was the Conservative candidate for clerk in 2023, when there was a three-way race to succeed longtime Cayuga County Clerk Sue Dwyer. Brian Scanlan, an independent who was endorsed by the Democratic committee, defeated Lytle and Republican Chris Petrus in the general election.Â
Scanlan abruptly resigned Tuesday after less than 15 months on the job. His departure leaves the county clerk's office without its top two officials. The first deputy clerk, Lisa Jo Greenfield, is out on medical leave.Â
Shelley Patterson, the second deputy clerk, is fulfilling some of the duties. Oswego County Clerk Terry Wilbur has sent staff to assist Cayuga County after Scanlan's resignation.Â
Gov. Kathy Hochul has the authority to appoint a clerk, but a special election will likely be held to fill the remainder of Scanlan's four-year term. The term expires at the end of 2027.Â
