Cayuga County Clerk Brian Scanlan is exploring better options for the Department of Motor Vehicles and his staff after it was announced that the county office building will be closed for the next two years.Â
At the Cayuga County Legislature's Government Operations Committee meeting on Sept. 11, Scanlan invited legislators to visit his office's temporary locations. Since the building closed in late May, the clerk's office has been sharing space with the county historian. The DMV moved to the Cayuga County Public Safety Building in Sennett.Â

"We're very cramped in the space we're in," Scanlan said. "The staff has done a tremendous job getting us through these few months, and it's worked on a temporary basis. But this can't last on a long-term basis."Â
Scanlan's comments followed the county Legislature's vote to lease the former Lyons National Bank building at 63 Genesee St. in Auburn. The building will be used by a few county agencies, including the Department of Social Services, during the extended closure.Â
In an interview with Ë®¹ûÅÉAV, Scanlan said there have been discussions with county leadership about options for the clerk's office during the closure. As clerk, he oversees four departments — the DMV, historian, recording office and records center.Â
Scanlan did not disclose the potential places. For the DMV, though, he said it would be ideal to have a central location with accessibility and ample parking.Â
"We got to keep all options on the table," he said. "We gotta find a practical spot for the staff and for the public."Â
The DMV and the recording office are the main departments affected by the closure, according to Scanlan. Both were displaced when the building closed in the spring. The historian's office and records center are located in other buildings.Â
Scanlan noted that the historian's office is not only sharing space with the clerk's office, but with the Department of Social Services. Because of space limitations, the clerk's office is open for appointments only.Â
"The staff has done a terrific job getting the office built back up," he said. "We basically built an office from the ground up again."Â
Three months into the closure, the clerk's office isn't operating at full capacity. One of the services not being offered is processing passport applications. With a better space, Scanlan hopes to make that available again within the next few months.
The office building closure disrupted operations at the DMV, a revenue-generating agency for the county. Scanlan said they lost about $30,000 when the DMV was closed for more than two weeks in May and early June.Â
Although most DMV services are available, they are unable to do testing. Scanlan said the department also lost revenue because some residents weren't aware of the temporary location.Â
The DMV is accepting walk-ins at the public safety building. The office is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Â
The clerk's office is open for appointments. Residents can make an appointment by calling (315) 253-1271 or emailing cayugacountyclerk@cayugacounty.us.
