Support my brother for family court judge
Steven Buschman is a lifetime resident of Cayuga County. He has many positive character traits I can bear witness to including: justice, honesty, persistence, fairness wisdom, courage, temperance and kindness.
I had a 25-year career as a therapist, licensed clinical social worker in an Office of Mental Health Residential Treatment Facility. As a lawyer, Steven represented an 18-year-old female client who was aging out of the OMH RTF program. She was assessed by the clinical treatment team including a psychiatrist, a clinical psychologist, a school psychologist and a primary therapist, with the support of administration as needing Office of People with Developmental Disabilities services. These two programs were from two different funding streams, therefore it was not as a transfer from one to another. An application needed to be made to OPPD on the client鈥檚 behalf that included all clinical reports.
The first court case resulted in a denial of state OPDD. Steven appealed this case and won this on behalf of the client in appeals court. Thankfully, the female client was then entitled to lifetime services, including group home living, workshop employment, mental health counseling, recreation, life skills and social skills training. She needed all of these services.
Just when the client鈥檚 future looked bleakest, Steven鈥檚 win in appeals court case resulted in providing the client an opportunity for a quality of life that would be provided throughout her lifetime! This is just one example of his kindness, persistence and sense of justice that made a significant difference.
Thank you Steven for your 26 years of service in Cayuga County Family Court. You will make a spectacular family court judge.
Experience matters for Family Court judge
I鈥檓 writing to express my support for Steven Buschman for Cayuga County Family Court judge. Steven is one of the major reasons I attended law school and became an attorney. During my time in college, I interned with Steven鈥檚 law firm and witnessed firsthand his passion for his clients and his community. It was a privilege to observe Steven鈥檚 legal acumen and ability to connect with clients to achieve the desired outcome. I drew from my experience working with Steven to serve as a guide through law school and into my legal career.
I believe in Steven鈥檚 campaign message 鈥 experience matters. Steven has asked voters to look at his track record practicing in Cayuga County Family Court since 1997. His professional success in Cayuga County for nearly three decades places him in a position to hit the ground running as family court judge. This role serves all residents of Cayuga County, regardless of personal beliefs or political affiliation. Steven will act in a fair, impartial, and nonpartisan manner, as required to execute this position. Above all else, Steven loves his community. I ask that when you vote, vote for the most qualified candidate. Vote Steven Buschman for Cayuga County Family Court judge!
Mannion, Phillips will both deliver results for us
A friend recently reminded me that two of our candidates have a lot in common with Tim Walz, the Democratic candidate for vice president. Both John Mannion and Ian Phillips have strong ties with their communities and have served with integrity in various positions.
John Mannion, who is running for U.S. Congress, was a science teacher at West Genesee High School for two decades and also served as president of the teachers鈥 union. He then ran for state Senate, where he passed legislation to protect funding for schools, provide health care for the disadvantaged, and extend voting rights.
Ian Phillips also served the education community. As president of Auburn鈥檚 school board, he secured free lunch for all students and helped get funding for special education teachers.
When he was chair of the Cayuga County Democratic Committee, he inspired Democrats to run for office, and now they have the majority of the county Legislature.
Like Tim Walz, John and Ian stress the importance of actually listening to their constituents and are not afraid to cross the aisle to solve problems. They each promise to work for all of us and deliver results that benefit all of us.
Inadequate maintenance could destroy Wells College
We write with a sense of urgency and deep concern regarding an imminent threat to the historic buildings at Wells College in Aurora, which announced its closure on April 29. Last month, the Wells Legacy Society, learned that the college鈥檚 current leadership plans to shut off the water and keep the buildings unheated all winter. This decision will have catastrophic consequences for these irreplaceable historic structures and their contents, which are an integral part of central New York鈥檚 cultural heritage.
Without heat, the buildings and their contents will be vulnerable to severe damage. Mold and mildew will rise dramatically and ruin the college鈥檚 extensive holdings of historical artifacts, art works, archives and books. The adverse conditions will also impact the buildings themselves, damaging walls and woodwork.
Furthermore, winter鈥檚 cold weather will cause pipes to freeze and crack. The cracks will leak when the water is turned back on, causing immediate damage as well as unseen deterioration with seepage behind walls which will lead to a loss of structural integrity. Maintenance professionals have informed us that the large campus buildings served by a single antiquated steam heat system cannot be adequately 鈥渨interized鈥 against damage. The system is simply too big to be completely drained. The remaining water will freeze and the pipes will crack, leak and cause damage.
More than a dozen buildings on the Wells campus are listed in the National Register of Historic Places, including the 1852 limestone Tuscan villa Glen Park (the home of founder Henry Wells), the 1858 Gothic revival Pettibone House, and the iconic 1890 four-story brick Main Building. In addition, the award-winning library designed by Walter Netsch and built by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill in 1968 is listed as a local historic landmark.
The college’s trustees are responsible for protecting these very valuable assets. Recklessly refusing to heat the buildings demonstrates a blatant dereliction of duty. We must act now to prevent irreversible damage. Please contact your elected representatives and ask for state intervention to protect these historic buildings for future generations. Buschman is compassionate, respectful and impartial
I have known Steve Buschman personally and on a professional basis for many years. Steve is the only candidate for Cayuga County Family Court judge with the legal background and management skills necessary to efficiently and fairly tackle the large and difficult caseload of the family court. He will provide the citizens of our county with the compassionate, respectful and impartial judicial temperament that we demand of our judges. His enthusiasm and sincere commitment to the concerns of the community deserves our support.
Williams is no friend of regular working folks
Brandon Williams and the Republican Party will not fight for you. Brandon Williams is an out of touch multi-millionaire. He doesn鈥檛 understand your economic needs. He doesn鈥檛 know the feeling of sitting down with the monthly bills and wondering which ones must be paid now, and which can be put off a little longer. He doesn鈥檛 know the feeling of getting to the checkout register and wondering if there is enough money in the bank to cover the full order of groceries.
Williams will only fight for his fellow millionaires and billionaires, not you. If elected, he will vote to extend the Trump tax cuts for billionaires and corporations. The Congressional Budget Office estimates this alone will add $4.6 trillion to the deficit over 10 years. Let鈥檚 be clear 鈥 the only way to make up this kind of deficit is to cut Social Security and Medicare, and that is exactly what Trump and Williams will do. Trump has proposed budgets that cut Social Security and Medicare. If elected again, he will do this again, and Brandon Williams will help him every step of the way.
And if you鈥檙e not on Social Security or Medicare, the Trump/Williams plan will still hurt you. Trump has proposed generating large amounts of funds via tariffs, but he doesn鈥檛 understand how tariffs work. Other countries won鈥檛 be paying more to the U.S. for goods from overseas, instead, those costs will be passed directly to you, the consumer. The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center has estimated that this will cost the average household an additional $1,800 per year. That money means nothing to a multimillionaire like Brandon Williams, but it will hurt you.
You have the power to change this. If Brandon Williams won鈥檛 fight for the regular working folks of this area, then you can. This election, vote for a former schoolteacher who will fight for the working people of central New York. Drop Brandon Williams to the curb and vote for John Mannion.
